Statement from the leader of the council

Following a meeting of Croydon’s Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) today (17 March), leader of the council Councillor Tony Newman said:

“I know everyone is rightly concerned about the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the impact this will have on all of our lives. Today we have met with our partners including the NHS, police, voluntary sector and businesses, to ensure together we are doing all we can to support our local community in this difficult time.

“I want to reassure you that as a council our number one priority is to continue to deliver the vital public services residents depend on, and to safeguard and look after the most vulnerable.

“Our frontline services such as waste and recycling collections, and adult and children’s social care have well-developed plans to minimise disruption. We are also working closely with local partners and co-ordinating our response, to ensure that everyone can access the support that they need and that no one is left behind.

“Some of you may need extra help at this time, and there is lots out there. Visit the NHS UK website for the latest updates on how to stay healthy and safe, and visit for information about support if you are experiencing hardship.

“Croydon’s great strength is its community, and it’s great to see so many of you doing what you can to help others. If you want to volunteer, Croydon Voluntary Action can help you to do this where it will have the most impact and you can sign up online at”
