Sign-up now to take part in the Great British Spring Clean

Croydon residents are invited to join in the nation’s largest clean-up event, the Great British Spring Clean, as it kicks off tomorrow (Friday 17 March).

The council is looking forward to having even more volunteers join its fast-growing Street Champions network, that has seen 725 residents helping to safely dispose of litter from the borough’s streets, parks and green spaces.

The annual event held by Keep Britain Tidy will build on the outstanding work of Street Champions like the pupils of Riddlesdown Collegiate and members of the Friends of Upper Norwood Rec – as well as everyone who gave their time to clean up Croydon.

The Great British Spring Clean will run until 4 April, and participants can pledge to pick litter as either individuals or groups.

Pupils and staff are also invited to join in and pledge to pick litter around their schools, as part of the Great Big School Clean.

The council provides the loan of equipment – litter-picking tools, high vis, and bags – free of charge to participants, subject to availability.

Those wishing to participate in this year’s event can visit Keep Britain Tidy’s website to register their pledge, and then send an email to notifying the council of the desired locations, times and dates of their litter picks.

Organisers will be then contacted to arrange equipment rental pick-up.

Jason Perry

“In 2022 our litter heroes cleared 8600 bags of rubbish, fly-tipped waste, leaves, and debris from across Croydon, and the Great British Spring Clean was a huge part of that success. We saw families, seniors, local businesses, and residents’ associations from all parts of the borough join in and do their bit.

“It’s fantastic to see how much our Street Champions and residents care about Croydon and take pride in their neighbourhoods, and we really appreciate everything they do – if you are thinking about volunteering, the Great British Spring Clean is a great opportunity to get involved.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
