Historic church to light up West Croydon

New architectural lighting has been installed on a historic West Croydon church as part of a project to improve the area and create a safer, brighter environment.

The new lighting at St Michael and All Angels with St James Church, a grade 1 listed building in Poplar Walk, will be formally switched on by the Bishop of Fulham Jonathan Baker on Thursday, 12 November.

The lighting highlights the stained glass windows and bell tower features and brings more ambient light to the surrounding public space.

The project is part of the Connected Croydon programme, funded by the Mayor’s Regeneration Fund, which has delivered £4.6m improvements in West Croydon to the public realm and transport interchange around Station Road, North End, West Croydon Station, Poplar Walk and St Michaels Road.

In addition, major works to rebuild and modernise West Croydon bus station are due to be completed next year.

Thursday’s switch-on coincides with the Christmas lights being turned on in Croydon town centre.

“St Michael and All Angels Church is located in a prominent position at the West Croydon Interchange and enhancing its lighting is a key part of improving the area.

“West Croydon is currently undergoing significant regeneration which will revitalise and transform what is a major transport hub and gateway to the town centre.

“It’s fantastic that we’re able to use an important part of the area’s heritage to deliver these much-needed improvements.”

Councillor Alison Butler, deputy leader and cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning

“The Mayor’s Regeneration Fund is delivering £70m of long-term improvements across the capital and in Croydon we have been working closely with the council to make the borough a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

“I am delighted that we have been able to support such an illuminating project, which has not only brought improvements to the area but is also making the most of such a beautiful church.”

Sir Edward Lister, Deputy Mayor for Planning
