Residents across Croydon are being invited to get help to go online and learn skills needed to be employable in a digital economy – as a number of free digital workshops begin next week.
The council is working with Croydon-based IT support company RedDoor to deliver workshops to help residents of all ages get online, and with Facebook and Freeformers to deliver a digital skills training programme for people aged 18-30.
The workshops led by RedDoor volunteers start on 30 October at Sanderstead Library. They will teach residents a host of skills, including how to use the internet safely, create an email account and start sending emails, shop and bank online, and use social media to stay in touch with family and friends. The workshop starts at 1.30pm and runs for two hours.
Additional workshops will be taking place across the borough:
• Central Library, Tuesday 5 November, 1.30pm-3.30pm
• Broad Green Library, Friday 8 November, 1.30pm-3.30pm
• Bradmore Green Library, Tuesday 12 November, 12noon-2pm
• Ashburton Library, Thursday 14 November, 1pm-3pm
• Coulsdon Library, Thursday 21 November, 1pm-3pm
• Selsdon Library, Thursday 28 November, 12noon-2pm
• Purley Library, Monday 2 December, 1pm-3pm
• Shirley Library, Tuesday 10 December, 12noon-2pm
• Addington Library, Friday 13 December, 1.30pm-3.30pm
• Thornton Heath Library, Tuesday 17 December – 12noon-2pm.
A further session, at Norbury Library, will take place once the library’s refurbishment has completed. Dates for more sessions across all of Croydon Libraries will follow for next year.
To book a space, visit or call your local library. Places can also be booked by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Facebook-led programme, at Croydon College, aims to enable residents aged between 18 and 30 to develop the confidence and skills needed as the role digital plays in everyday life increases. The face-to-face sessions, which cover various modules including cybersecurity, innovation and social media marketing, begin on 30 October, between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.
Two other sessions will take place on 13 November and 18 November at the same times. To sign up, visit: https://www.croydonworks.co.uk/opportunities/3113/free-digital-skills-training-from-facebook
“The free sessions led by RedDoor provide an ideal chance for residents who may be apprehensive about getting online the opportunity to do so safely.
“For those who are looking to learn new skills and become more employable as the world continues to become more online-orientated, the programme at Croydon College will allow residents to make the most of the digital world and open up new career opportunities.”
