Croydon’s ‘Big Lunch’ weekend – in pictures

Scores of ‘Big Lunch’ street parties took place across Croydon over the weekend to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Dozens of streets were closed and despite the weather people set up marquees in many local parks to share a meal with friends and neighbours in what is now an incredibly popular annual event.

The council waived many of the usual charges for administering official road closures, and sound equipment and large tents were loaned to organisers to help them minimise costs.

“Despite the heavens opening on both Saturday and Sunday most of Croydon’s events went ahead pretty much as planned. Neighbours spent time together, shared food, enjoyed some great live music, and had a fantastic time. As a council we’d love to see more people holding community events like these all year round, and we’re happy to help out wherever we can.”

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for communities, safety and justice
