Croydon raises 10 green flags to mark the quality of its green spaces

Ten parks and open spaces in Croydon have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world.

The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that spaces boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained, and have excellent visitor facilities.

As well as retaining the nine flags awarded last year, Croydon achieved an additional accolade for Millers Pond.

Alongside parks and woodland, the council also achieved its seventh successive green flag for Mitcham Road Cemetery. The 51-acre site located next to Mitcham Common is the largest of three belonging to Croydon Council and includes the crematorium with its eight-acre garden of remembrance.

The other parks recognised for 2017 are Happy Valley, Coulsdon Memorial Ground, Haling Grove, Lloyd Park, Wandle Park, Wettern Tree Garden, Coombe Wood, and South Norwood Lake.

“It’s fantastic to receive these 10 Green Flag Awards for 2017.

“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and these awards celebrate the dedication that goes into maintaining them to such a high standard. We are proud of what we have achieved and we’re determined to keep impressing the judges in the future. The council is continuing to invest in improvements to many parks and open spaces, and we are looking at new ways to ensure this can be sustained over coming years.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
