Broad Green communities ready for carnival

The party comes to Broad Green this weekend with the return of the London Road carnival on Sunday.

A colourful parade produced by local artists will take centre stage during the day and grime artist IQ will be performing, along with local groups who have auditioned to take part in front of their neighbours.

The event, with the support of Croydon Council, has been organised by Croydon Voluntary Action (CVA), local small and medium enterprises (SME) and the London Road Business Association along with young people in the area.

It has been sponsored by a number of businesses and will feature performing arts, entertainment for children, stage shows, stalls and crafts. Easy Gym will be hosting outdoor fitness activities and local food and drink providers will be on hand to make sure people can enjoy the festivities without getting hungry or thirsty.

In order to facilitate the carnival, London Road will be closed between Oakfield Road and Montague Road from 7am on Sunday until 9pm.

“It’s great to see this festival back for the communities in Broad Green to enjoy.

“Hopefully the good weather continues through Sunday and people can have a great time in the sunshine enjoying all that their local communities and businesses have to offer.”

Councillor Paul Scott, cabinet member for environment, transport and regeneration

Steve Phaure, chief executive of the CVA, said: “CVA, the SME Consortium and the London Road Business Association have been bringing people together since 2012 to celebrate the vibrancy of West Croydon’s local communities and businesses.

“In organising the event, we’ve taken a supporting role behind a group of young people whose goal is to celebrate their artistic creativity, enterprise and ambition as part of a campaign against youth violence, showcasing all the positive choices that young people are making in Croydon. With a wide range of street arts taking place including a talent competition and a fashion show, we are delighted to see young people taking centre stage at this year’s carnival on Sunday 22 July – in the heart of Croydon!”
